Akwa United maintained their impressive home form with a hard fought victory over Sunshine Stars of Akure on Matchday 18 of the NPFL at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.

A goal in each half by Super Eagles midfielder Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Victor Mbaoma saw the Promise Keepers to their 7th home win and their 8th victory of the season.

It was United’s first game after their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup competition in midweek, and they responded nicely with a win which moved them up to 4th on the log with 26 points.

A blistering start to the game by both teams saw them create some good goal scoring chances but failed to convert them

However, the home side took the lead in the 41st minute from a free kick.
Adeshina Gata was fouled on the edge of the visitor’s box and midfielder Ifeanyi Ifeanyi stepped up and scored one of his trademark goals. It was his second goal of the season both from set pieces.

On resumption of play, the visitors pushed for an equaliser and got it in the 48th minute. Goalkeeper Ismaila Shagari mistimed a high ball and somehow dropped it on the path of Franklin Sasere who made no mistake inside six yards to level the scores.

The 2017 Aiteo Cup Champions picked themselves up and mounted pressure on their visitors, created many clear cut chances but were unable to put them away

Two legitimate penalty appeals by the hosts were waved off by the referee, much to the frustration of the fans. But their dominance and persistent pressure paid off in the 88th minute.

Striker Victor Mbaoma calmly controlled Gabriel Wassa’s cross inside the box and turned away from his marker neatly to score his fifth league goal of the season and secure for his team all three points.

The Promise Keepers with three outstanding matches will next confront CAF Confederation Cup campaigners Enyimba International in their adopted home in Calabar this weekend.
