WHY AKPABIO IS UNDER WATCH
The desperate quest to get Senate Minority Leader, Chief Dr Godswill Akpabio out of the way before the full commencement of the 2019 General Election is the latest scheme embattled Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mr Nsima Ekere is occupied with.
An insider of the think tank of the NDDC boss who is nursing the ambition of running for Governor of Akwa Ibom State in 2019 confided in our reporter on grounds of anonymity that, Mr Nsima Ekere is working hard on a plot to get his erstwhile boss, Senator Akpabio nailed using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,.
The source revealed that, Mr Ekere who resigned as Deputy Governor under then Governor Akpabio to save his face from looming impeachment by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, is convinced that, with Akpabio in the mix, he cannot make any head way in his governorship project.
Nsima Ekere reportedly told insiders that he is determined to get Akpabio indicted or behind bars and with the EFCC as a distraction, he will not be able to play a significant role in 2019.
It will be recalled that, Security operatives on Sunday, July 30, stormed the Abuja home of Mary Ekpenyong, an aide to the Senate Minority Leader, and former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio.
A private security man guarding the compound located in the Jabi District said the armed men forcibly gained access to the house using metal equipment, claiming to be acting on a whistle-blower tip to search for loot in the residence, which they found nothing.
Thesource revealed that, the APC in Akwa Ibom State chapter, and the Nsima Ekere faction in particular, have impressed it on the national leadership of the party, that, if Akpabio is not intimidated or caged, the APC will not stand a chance in the state. The source however said, the real reason Nsima Ekere is bitter with Akpabio is the recent association of the Senate Minority Leader with, a former PDP chieftain and leader of the Akwa Ibom Peoples Forum, AKPF, Bishop Samuel F. Akpan, who recently defected to the APC from the Accord Party. Nsima Ekere and his faction of the APC fear that, Bishop Akpan is Akpabio’s mole in APC, and is on a mission to stop his (Ekere’s) ambition.
The sudden make – up between the duo of Senator Akpabio and Bishop Akpan, is very suspicious to the group sympathetic to Nsima Ekere in the APC
It will be recalled that, a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) protested the visit , on Saturday 8th July 2017 by a socio-political Group, Akwa Ibom Peoples Forum (AKPF) and its leadership to the country home of former Governor and now Senate Majority Leader, Obong Godswill Akpabio at Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area.
Reacting to a letter of invitation proposing “A Moment with Senator Akpabio” and signed by the leader of the Group, Bishop Samuel Akpan shortly after his formal defection to the APC,
the Nsima Ekere faction cried wolf that Obong Godswill Akpabio is a Grand Patron of the group and dissociated the APC from the move.
The protest letter which was signed by the factional Ag. Publicity Secretary of APC in the State, Barrister Edet Bassey, read in part, ‘while we cannot infringe on such rights of assembly, we wish to draw the attention of the general public particularly our party men and women that the proposed visit by AKPF to Obong Godswill Akpabio’s country home has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with APC. Akwa Ibom APC wishes in clear and unequivocal terms to disassociate itself from the proposed visit to Ukana Ikot Ntuen. Bishop Samuel Akpan and his Group and any member of the Party thereof who wishes to visit Senator Akpabio in his country home as schedule is entitled to do so in their individual capacity but definitely not under the name and banner of APC.
For emphasis, we wish to state once again that the party is not connected or in anyway associated with AKPF and the propose visit. Please be guided accordingly.”
The letter was dated July 7th 2017
The source told our correspondent that, Nsima Ekere has not forgiven Akpabio and all those he believes in plotted his downfall from power, and is bidding his time to take his pound of flesh, if he becomes governor, an ambition pundits describe as dead on arrival.
