IBIBIO NATION HONOURS UDOM: HINDSIGHT IS ALWAYS 20/20 VISION
“Ibibio Nation Honours Governor Udom Emmanuel” – one of the many headlines that announced the “Mother of all Receptions.”
Recently, at the Asan Ibibio, His Excellency, Mr Udom Emmanuel and his wife were given the Mother of all Receptions and effectively endorsed for a second term by the Ibibio nation. He was even presented with a sword of valour because he is a brave Ibibio son. Very commendable!
However, how much better would it have been, if, in 2014 or even early 2015 he had been invited to Asan Ibibio to be recognized, even if not given a Grand Reception. Nevertheless, all is forgiven! After all, there was a Thomas in the Bible; and I remember reading in the good book, that Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Trust me, I am not miffed by the unbelief, but I have to vent my displeasure at what I consider an unfortunate display of selective amnesia. Plus, I am not going to pull any punches.
You know, we really should have acknowledged and expressed clearly, without ambiguity, our appreciation to the man who showed the way – the Utuene Ikang Akwa Ibom. Yes, I know, I know, that many actions that result from visionary leadership are usually misunderstood and unappreciated, at first. But there again, that usually is the opportunity for the seasoned leader with the vision to show his/her mettle! They are ready and know how to take the heat, because they see what many others don’t.
I stand to be corrected, but, I don’t remember any such statements of appreciation from the Ibibio leaders. If there was one, please send me the clip and I apologize in advance. However, if there was none, I apologize on behalf of my Eteboms. See! Just in case you are by now, cocking your ‘guns’ to deliver your first salvos, please be advised that I am covered by the immunity of Awasi Ajejen, so please put down your weapons.
Honesty and humility are hallmarks of exemplary leadership. It was the Irish writer, C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), who said, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”
As Akwa Ibomites and with the benefit of hindsight, there are clearly two, if not three reasons why we should thank the Senate Minority Leader, His Excellency, Godswill O. Akpabio, CON. Not only did he show the way as it pertained to the right choice (all pun intended) for 2015 Governorship candidate, insisting on the rotation principle that was established by his predecessor, His Excellency, Obong Victor Attah; but he showed the way as it pertained to which political party, Akwa Ibom State was to identify with. Happily, he is still doing just that. After all, he was first to admonish us to remain with the PDP faction that won at the Supreme Court, the other day! Let’s give credit to whom credit is due.
The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Mr Udom Emmanuel continues to be the admiration of everyone as he displayed those hallmarks of exemplary leadership by inviting the Senate Minority Leader to commission the 6-kilometer Nda Nsit-Ikot Abasi-Idiaba, the very next day. Your Excellency, long may your unity with, mutual respect and admiration for your predecessor be!
In closing, it is my firm belief that as we, Akwa Ibomites, “Rise to togetherness”, we must not only pay lip service to that component of the Dakkada Creed. It behooves us to demonstrate by our actions, that we can oil this machinery of togetherness whilst closing up all gaps in our relationship walls as a people!
I dare to speak, because, in the words of Dino Melaye, albeit not verbatim, “if one speaks the truth they die, if they don’t, they die. I shall speak the truth and live.”
