BISHOP AKPAN LEADS APC MEMBERS TO AKPABIO
….HE IS ON HIS OWN, APC SPOKESMAN
Thousands of members of the All Progressives Party in Akwa Ibom have moved to commend and identify with the successes recorded by the immediate past governor and senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio.
Following the successful empowerment and constituency briefing carried out by Senator Akpabio, a group of APC faithful led by Bishop Sam Akpan have written to pay a solidarity visit to the senator.
The APC stalwarts under the aegis of Akwa Ibom Peoples Forum, AKPF has proposed a visit for Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Ukana country home of the former governor.
The APC members led by Bishop Sam Akpan, are due to eulogise the recent show of effective representation by Akpabio, and to urge him on as senator.
However the action of Bishop Akpan a 2015 governorship candidate of the Accord Party who last month defected to the APC with his supporters from the AP.
However his open support to the leadership prowess of Senator Akpabio has stirred the hornet’s nest as the party leadership has come out to bicker over the planned visit.
The All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State has disowned Bishop Sam Akpan, and activities involving his political group, Akwa Ibom People’s Forum, AKPF.
In a press release in Uyo, the APC carpeted Bishop Sam Akpan for identifying with the successes recorded by Senator Godswill Akpabio and planning a visit to the senate minority leader in his Ukana residence.
Despite admitting that the AKPF of which Sam Akpan is the leader, is a registered association, APC in a statement signed by its acting publicity secretary, Edet Bassey came out to say, “we wish to state once again that the party is not connected or in anyway associated with AKPF and the propose visit.”
The statement reads in part, “The State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is aware of a scheduled visit tomorrow, Saturday 8th July 2017 by a socio-political Group, Akwa Ibom Peoples Forum (AKPF) and its leadership to the country home of former Governor and now Senate Majority Leader, Obong Godswill Akpabio at Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area.”
“A search conducted by the Party revealed that AKPF is an Incorporated Trustee with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) with statutory rights including the right of public assembly. Further information revealed that Obong Godswill Akpabio is a Grand Patron of the Group and the proposed visit is in furtherance of felicitation with his recent constituency briefings.
“While APC cannot infringe on such rights of assembly, we wish to draw the attention of the general public particularly our party men and women that the proposed visit by AKPF to Obong Godswill Akpabio’s country home has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with APC.
“Akwa Ibom APC wishes in clear and unequivocal terms to disassociate itself from the proposed visit to Ukana Ikot Ntuen. Bishop Samuel Akpan and his Group and any member of the Party thereof who wishes to visit Senator Akpabio in his country home as schedule is entitled to do so in their individual capacity but definitely not under the name and banner of APC.”
