UK TRAINED TURBOMACHINERY ENGINEER PROFFER SOLUTION TO ENGINEERING SECTOR OF AKWA IBOM
……Laud Governor Udom Emmanuel’s Developmental stride.
A Turbomachinery engineer and former researcher of the Roll- Royce supported University Technology Centre for Aero- Thermal System United Kingdom; Engr. Dr. Godwin Ekong has said that the rapid improvement in the engineering and industrial sectors of Akwa Ibom
States depend on the extent of the relationship between the State Government and the Nigerian society of Engineers (NSE).
Dr. Ekong in a lecture organised by the Uyo branch of the NSE on May 14,2017, noted that the basic aim of engineering practice was to utilise the reources within the physical environment to improve the living standard of mankind.
Ekong who spoke on ENGINEERING RESEARCH AND TRAINING: A KEY TO GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT said engineering activities were vital to the welfare of man by providing food, shelter, transportation, communication and other comforts, adding that such engineering research was aimed at findingadvances or improvements in theory and practice in all engineering fields.
He emphasised the need for the inclusion of engineers in key areas of government for rapid development.
“When the right key is given to the right man, development occurs”. He said.
Mentioning some engineers in the state who had used the key effectively in public office to include Engr. (Obong) Christopher Ekpenyong, former deputy governor of the state, Engr. Professor Charles Uko,former commissioner for lands and housing and Engr. Professor Linus Asuquo, the pioneer Commissioner for Science and technology in Akwa Ibom state, among others.
He commended the State Governor, Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, for using all keys given to him by God effectively as seen in the developmental programmes in the state, since assumption of office.
The Don appreciated the effort of the state government in partnering with the state House of Assembly headed by “the man with the right key in the Legislature”, Rt. Hon Barr Onofiok Luke, Speaker of the 6thAssembly, whose works are very commendable.
Bringing in, into the development of the state, Mr Okon Okon as the chairman, board of internal revenue, a man with the right key, a prolific banker, and many others, shows the ship of the state is steady and on a right direction.
He encouraged the NSE to partner and advise the government on all engineering matters, request and received the right keys belonging to engineers from government since, according to him, ” When the right keys are given to engineers from government, Akwa Ibom will experience tremendous development in our engineering and industrial sectors including the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) sector of the Ibom Airport”.
He also appealed to the state government to support NSE, Uyo branch, in its research and training programmes as well as the Governor to give the keys of engineering in ministries and parastatals to engineers to fast track development.
The guest lecturer told the participants that engineering research and training would offer opportunities for engineers to learn new techniques of solving problems, listing such techniques to include but not limited to Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch (TRIZ),structured brainstorming, 40 inventive principles and lateral thnking.
“This will give engineers confidence in their work and practice, it will expose engineers to global best practice, and if engineers are given the right environment for research and training, then we would have great inventors and innovators before their forties, he stressed.
He further reminded the participants of important roles engineering Educations and research has played in guiding the world’s industrial capabilities resulting in the increasing technically advanced and complex products and system. This includes, but not limited to smart phones, high speed trains, aeroplanes, drones, gas turbine and complex engineering software such as Math Lab,Ansys,Fluent, pro Engineers, Auto CAD, etc.”
The University lecturer insisted that “If Engineers are involved in engineering research and training; they will gain knowledge and understanding of the role of engineers in society and the professional and ethical of engineers; as such will be able to analyse and solve engineering problems using appropriate skills.
“Engineers will also be able to analyse experimental results and determine their validity. They will have details knowledge of and the ability to apply the essential facts, concepts, principles and theories needed by an engineer, and will apply a good methodology to the engineering brief by applying professional judgements.
This will also help engineers develop creative and innovative solutions to engineering problems, thereby being able to plan, undertake and manage engineering projects.
The Uyo branch chairman of NSE, Engr. Amb. Mfon UdoIkpong lauded the presenter for his erudite presentation and promised to implement the recommendations. He also appreciated the members for their massive turnout at the event.
The Technical Secretary, Engr. Dr. Ubong Ukommi, appealed to the government to permit the relevant officials in ministries and parastatals to participate in such lectures when invited, saying the knowledge gained would enhance the productivity and general development of the state.
