Students of AKSU Visit AKEES’ Toothpick, Pencil Factory
...Commend Gov. Udom’s industrialisation Agenda
As part of the activities to mark the first Engineering week in Akwa Ibom State University tagged “Energy and Technological Entrepreneurs: a Panacea for the Nation’s Economy” and to acquaint themselves of the production processes of Toothpick and Pencil, the Students of Faculty of Engineering, Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, on Thursday, visited the Akwa Ibom Enterprise and Employment Scheme (AKEES) Pencil and Toothpick Factory located at Kilometer 2, Uyo-Etinan Road, Ekom Iman, Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking on behalf of the Students, the President of the faculty, Comrade Godwin Esu, said they were amazed at the giant strides of Governor Udom Emmanuel-led administration, maintaining the Factory is a laudable project that will further project the State in good light.
Another speaker who responded after the president speech, Comrade Goodnews Epelle who confirmed the originality of the Factory’s products, noted he had earlier doubted the authenticity of the Project and had to mobilised his colleague and embarked on an eyewitness assessment to clear his doubts, he thought it wise to make it part of the activities to mark the engineering week.
“I thought it wise to take advantage of this tour and mobilize my colleague to come and see what Governor Udom Emmanuel has brought to our State, it is a laudable project that will further project Akwa Ibom State and bring more investors.
“We didn’t believe this until now that we have seen, we will go and spread the good news about the factory. Maybe those who are saying the factory is a scam have not seen”, he added.
On criticisms about the existence of the Factory, he frowned at the widespread rumours that the Factory does not exist, and said the people doubting its existence should rather visit the Factory than engage in falsehood.
Comrade Goodnews urged people of the State to always appreciate and support the present administration, he thanked the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical Matters and Due Process, Elder Ufot Ebong and the management of the Company for approving the excursion and stressed that the Students community will continually support Governor Udom Emmanuel beyond 2019.
On his part, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical Matters and Due Process, Elder Ufot Ebong who spoke through his Media Aide Mr. Ekemini James said Governor Udom Emmanuel is working hard to see that Nigeria and other African countries stop importation of basic products such as toothpick and pencils from China.
“It is on record that China produces pencils and toothpicks used all over the African countries not until Governor Udom Emmanuel came. So he (Gov. Udom Emmanuel) inline with his industrialisation agenda established this first operational toothpick and pencils factory in Nigeria in order to make Akwa Ibom State a destination in Africa and take our teeming youths off the street and into work”
He hinted that our State is not just among the best, but has also become the benchmark for good governance and quality infrastructure.
Interacting with newsmen after the excursion, One Miss Anthonia Micheal said she had learnt about the production processes of Toothpick and Pencil and thanked the Governor for his industrialisation agenda.
Earlier, the Manager of the Factory, Mr Bassey Friday Moses had conducted the Students round the Factory and urged them to inculcate the fear of God and be studious, so they would turn great future leaders.
